Chaos Scar Encounter 1 - Discussion

Great Match tonight fellas... for a brief synopsis of what we need to decide I will outline what we can do.

I just looked it up, and if we choose to not take a rest of any kind we move along towards rescuing the dwarf faster, but it is only 5 minutes faster. If we think this will make a difference, and it will cost him his life, then I say we don't do it. We spend a surge and move on, but given that it is only 5 minutes I think we can do it. This is why I wanted to clarify, but we got cut off.

Here are the details of the two types of rest.

SHORT REST
✦ Duration: A short rest is about 5 minutes long.
✦ No Limit per Day: You can take as many short rests per day as you want.
✦ No Strenuous Activity: You have to rest during a short rest. You can stand guard, sit in place, ride on a wagon or other vehicle, or do other tasks that don’t require much exertion.
✦ Renew Powers: After a short rest, you renew your encounter powers, so they are available for your next encounter.
✦ Spend Healing Surges: After a short rest, you can spend as many healing surges as you want (see “Healing,” page 293). If you run out of healing surges, you must take an extended rest to regain them.
✦ Using Powers while You Rest: If you use an encounter power (such as a healing power) during a short rest, you need another short rest to renew it so that you can use it again.
✦ Interruptions: If your short rest is interrupted, you need to rest another 5 minutes to get the benefits of a short rest.

EXTENDED REST
✦ Duration: An extended rest is at least 6 hours long.
✦ Once per Day: After you finish an extended rest, you have to wait 12 hours before you can begin another one.
✦ No Strenuous Activity: You normally sleep during an extended rest, though you don’t have to. You can engage in light activity that doesn’t require much exertion.
✦ Regain Hit Points and Healing Surges: At the end of an extended rest, you regain any hit points you have lost and any healing surges you have spent.
✦ Powers: At the end of an extended rest, you regain all your encounter powers and daily powers.
✦ Action Points: At the end of an extended rest, you lose any unspent action points, but you start fresh with 1 action point.
✦ Interruptions: If anything interrupts your extended rest, such as an attack, add the time spent dealing with the interruption to the total time you need to spend in the extended rest.

I think it would be safe to take a short rest now, use a surge or two (without costing us second wind) and have the Cleric roll up our bonuses for doing it. It will also allow anyone who levels from this, to level. If the cleric levels, then we get him to roll after he does his leveling, so we get a better bonus for him assisting our healing ;)

Thoughts?

Winston, how urgent is it that we move on for the rescue? Because I think the 5 minutes shouldn't hurt anything, but that all depends on whether or not we think he is in dire straights and all that.

Put it this way. If we're so worried about time that we cannot rest five minutes between any of our encounters, then this is going to be one hellacious adventure, plus that means our encounter powers are, in effect, daily powers for the remainder of the adventure.

I should hope we can afford the short rest.

DM, do my insight or any other of my skills tell me if a 5 minute rest will mean scoot loosing an arm or dying? What is up with the arms holding weapons?

I didn't get a feel for how urgent we should press. It is obvious that an extended rest is out of the question but 5 minutes should be okay. Although, we should probably press on unless someone really needs a rest. We can possibly rest after the next encounter or have more information. We do have daily powers as a backup plan for the next encounter.
I say press on.

I'll say a 5 minute break will not alter the course of what happens too much.

that's 133 xp for everyone involved

In general, the encounter went pretty well for you guys, but i think that's because of my horrible rolls for the most part- Sean and Matt could have easily went down that encounter (although most of you didn't take much damage)

I am down to 9 hit points, taking a total of 19 damage overall. So I do plan on using 2 surges, I will get Sean to roll 2d6 for my bonus HP at the beginning of next encounter.

Winston, I am tracking all my own stuff, but would recommend that all you keep track of are these important things (what our DM tracks for us at work):

- characters using AP's
- characters failed death saves (strikes)
- characters overall XP

I would assume that many of you guys would have leveled after this encounter, so if you don't have access to the Character Builder for leveling your character let me know. If you have access to the books, I believe that I have a few of them up on the server already and know what you want for your new feats etc (depending on what you get when you level) let me know what you want and I can do up your character and send it on.

Sean, I will add your hammer to the character and get that pdf to you asap.

Some issues that I looked up this morning
saves occur at the end of your turn (so frekld should have saved at the end of his turn)
combat advantage is for directly opposite flankers (so one off does not offer combat advantage)

Don't beef it up too much. We are heroes so some encounters should go smoothly. We got pretty lucky that durzo was slice-n-dicing everything with good rolls and bad rolls for the monsters. Also, it seems we played the encounter almost perfectly considering the terrain advantage and bottlenecks that the enemy could of really punished us if we didn't have initiative to charge them.

we should take a 5 minute rest then to recover encounter powers since it won't make a difference.

Can you describe the final room again?

for the purpose to get this moving, I rolled sean's bonus for the healing surges (2d6?) for a total of six

it is 1d6 for each surge you use. It needs to be rolled separately for each surge used (across all players). Because I am using 2 surges, it would be 2d6, but for someone using only 1 surge, it would be 1d6.

Do you want me to take those two as mine, then you can roll for anyone else wanting to surge?
