in regards to frekld's comment in the narrative thread (don't want to derail that one)
the set-up for that encounter was such that surprise played a big role in the dragon's initial strategy.
you'll see when its your turn to DM- elaborate schemes and things you want to include in the gameplay are often thrown out the window

It's a dm philosophy thing. I always favor roleplaying over rules or set pieces, but I understand the issues that happen when the party gets loose and off track. Sometimes you have to force the narrative.

But in the end being dm is like being goalie in soccer. If you are willing to be the dm, do it however you want and I thank you for it.
